Description: Somewhere in the Austrian Alps, an apparently peaceful mountain village becomes the center of an absurd international intrigue when a secret formula capable of converting cow manure into fuel is hidden on microfilm.

Two agents arrive determined to recover it, but espionage quickly takes second place to the distractions offered by the local women, alpine inns, summer festivals, and an endless succession of misunderstandings.

Alena Penz leads the female cast as Sally, while Eva Garden, Sissy Löwinger, Joanna Jung, and Elisabeth Felchner add plenty of flirtation, revealing situations, and rustic sex-comedy energy. Lederhosen, low-cut dresses, haystacks, barns, and mountain scenery provide the expected visual vocabulary.

The espionage plot is deliberately ridiculous. Secret agents, scientists, villagers, policemen, and opportunists chase one another through Tirol while nearly every investigation is interrupted by seduction or some new bedroom complication.

Bottoms Up is classic early-70s German-language alpine sex comedy: broad slapstick, attractive women, bawdy jokes, scenic countryside, and an almost cheerful determination to turn every rural tradition into an excuse for erotic confusion.

Legacy Note: Directed by Franz Josef Gottlieb, the film belongs to the wave of Alpine erotic comedies that flourished during the 1970s, combining postcard landscapes and folk-comedy stereotypes with the increasingly permissive sexuality of the era.

Alena Penz provides much of the film’s glamour, supported by Eva Garden and a strong ensemble of familiar German-language comedy performers. The women are generally far more confident than the foolish men chasing either the microfilm or their affections.

Goofy, sexy, and proudly unserious, Bottoms Up turns a revolutionary energy formula into little more than an excuse for 81 minutes of alpine flirtation, exposed skin, mistaken identities, and adults behaving badly beneath the mountain sun.
