Description: “Evil Judgment,” although completed in 1981, faced post-production issues that kept it from joining the peak-year horror releases. It languished on the shelves for three years and was finally released directly to video in 1984. Such a fate typically befalls the weakest entries in the genre, so the initial outlook for this Canadian film wasn’t promising.
The story begins in a conventional setting as an unidentified patient escapes from an asylum, leaving a trail of murder in their wake. We are then introduced to our atypical heroine, Janet (played by Pamela Collyer), who defies the typical “final girl” stereotype often found in slasher films. Janet, weary of her job at a grimy café, decides to accompany her friend, a high-end prostitute, for a night of lucrative erotic work. However, things take an unexpected turn when an unseen maniac shows up, attempting to kill Janet. Although he fails to claim her life, the killer manages to murder her friend April (played by Nanette Workman) and their unfortunate client.
Realizing that Janet is now a witness, the killer relentlessly stalks her, leaving a gruesome trail of bodies in his wake. The plot takes unexpected twists and turns, keeping the audience guessing until a surprising conclusion.
Evil Judgment” remains relatively obscure, often overlooked compared to classics like “Prom Night” or “My Bloody Valentine.” However, it’s a hidden gem among peak-year murder mysteries. The film’s strengths lie in its ambitious plot and a standout performance by Jack Langedijk as the anti-hero Dino. Despite its obvious low budget, the director skillfully crafts an atmospheric thriller that defies typical slasher clichés. The story ventures into uncharted territory, blending elements of the Mafia with a demented psychopath, earning praise for its ambition and originality.
