Description: In the chilling thriller “Camper Stamper” a family of tourists on vacation in the woods and a group of young camp counselors, also in the same forest for training, find themselves under the terrorizing grip of a deranged psycho (portrayed creepily by Blake Gibbons).
Writer and director Michael S. O’Rourke takes a familiar yet enjoyable and effective storyline and maintains a steady pace throughout the film. He skillfully utilizes the wintry woodland locations, builds tension effectively, and draws decent performances from the relatively unknown cast. Alex Wexler stands out with an entertaining portrayal of the obnoxious horndog, Bobby. The film takes its time to develop colorful and engaging characters, and it doesn’t shy away from a no-holds-barred approach (including a high body count and unexpected character fates).
O’Rourke also adds a satisfying amount of gore and incorporates quirky elements, such as the amusingly kinky S&M couple. Michael Goi’s polished cinematography cleverly employs a prowling handheld camera for the killer‘s point-of-view shots. The film’s spirited and shivery score by Douglas Pipes hits just the right eerie notes.
For fans of 80s horror, “Moonstalker” is worth a watch, delivering the slice-and-dice thrills characteristic of the era.
