Description: Set in Napoleonic-era Westphalia, during the rule of Jérôme Bonaparte, the film centers on Susanne — a fiery redheaded innkeeper who inherits a riverside tavern near the university town of Giessen. Her beauty inspires love songs from local students, but also envy from rival businessman Goppelmann, who schemes to sabotage her livelihood.
To defend her inn, Susanne navigates flirtation, student unrest, and political maneuvering — pulling the charismatic student leader Anselmo into her orbit while maneuvering around French occupation authorities. Romance, rivalry, and light farce collide under powdered wigs and military uniforms.
