Description: Unable to recover from the death of her young son, Claudia leaves her husband and retreats to an isolated chalet in the snow-covered mountains. She chooses a place close to where the boy is buried, hoping solitude will bring some kind of peace. Instead, surrounded by silence, cold, and endless white landscapes, she sinks deeper into memory and guilt.
Then a strange child appears.
Thin, hungry, and seemingly alone, the boy calls himself Nino. He wanders in and out of Claudia’s life without explanation, arriving unexpectedly and vanishing just as quickly. No one in the nearby village seems to know who he is. Nobody can tell her where he lives. Yet his presence becomes increasingly important to Claudia, awakening the maternal instincts she has been unable to let go of since her son’s death.
As Claudia grows more attached to the mysterious boy, the line between grief and reality begins to blur. Her husband Andrea arrives at the chalet, worried by her deteriorating state of mind, but his presence only deepens the tension. Nino becomes distant and unpredictable, while Claudia’s search for him pulls her further into the frozen landscape and away from everyone trying to help her.
When a body is discovered in the mountains, the mystery takes a darker turn. In the snow nearby are a series of small footprints — the only trace of a child who may be real, imaginary, or something far more unsettling.
Legacy Note:
Child of the Night is an obscure French-Italian psychological thriller that works through mood rather than spectacle. Adapted from a story associated with French writer G.-J. Arnaud, it uses its snowy mountain setting as an extension of Claudia’s grief: beautiful, empty, and quietly threatening. The film never rushes to explain whether Nino is a lost child, a projection of trauma, or a supernatural presence. That ambiguity is its real strength, turning a simple story of maternal loss into a chilly, haunting Eurocult curiosity.
