Description: Behind some of the most provocative films of the 1960s and 1970s stood an unexpectedly romantic partnership. The Sarnos: A Life in Dirty Movies tells the intimate story of legendary sexploitation filmmaker Joseph W. Sarno and his devoted wife and creative companion, Peggy Steffans, whose lives became inseparable from the history of American erotic cinema.

Now in his late eighties, Sarno refuses to abandon his passion for filmmaking. Despite fading commercial interest, financial uncertainty, and the difficulties of old age, he dreams of directing one final erotic feature in the intimate, female-centered style that defined his career.

Filmmaker Wiktor Ericsson follows Joe and Peggy between their modest New York life and their peaceful summer retreat in Sweden. Their conversations, affectionate disagreements, memories, and everyday routines reveal a remarkable marriage sustained by artistic ambition, loyalty, and an enduring fascination with cinema.

Archival footage and interviews with figures including John Waters and Annie Sprinkle trace Sarno’s extraordinary journey through the sexploitation era, when intimate psychological dramas, nudity, and sexual freedom challenged the conventions of mainstream entertainment.

As the softcore industry gave way to more explicit adult cinema, Sarno struggled to preserve his distinctive artistic vision. What begins as a colorful portrait of an unconventional filmmaker gradually becomes a moving meditation on aging, forgotten fame, creative independence, and lasting love.

Legacy Note: Joseph W. Sarno (1921–2010) was one of the most distinctive directors in American exploitation history. Often celebrated for his unusually sophisticated treatment of desire, jealousy, guilt, and female psychology, he brought a European art-film sensibility to low-budget erotic entertainment.

His films frequently explored emotionally complicated women, troubled marriages, forbidden attractions, and the tensions beneath respectable suburban life. Works such as Sin in the Suburbs, Moonlighting Wives, Inga, and Abigail Lesley Is Back in Town helped establish his reputation as a filmmaker whose ambitions extended beyond conventional adult entertainment.

Featuring candid interviews, rare archival material, and an affectionate portrait of Joe and Peggy’s relationship, this intimate documentary preserves the legacy of an overlooked cinematic original. More than a history of erotic filmmaking, The Sarnos celebrates two people who dedicated their lives to each other and to the art they loved.
