Description: A long-buried tragedy hangs over a remote private island — a place locals whisper about, once guarded by a reclusive woman and her dogs. Decades later, a group of young adults take a weekend cruise across the lake, only for a tense night on the water to spiral into disaster when they rescue an injured drifter and drift too close to the island’s jagged rocks. One reckless decision later, their boat is wrecked… and the island becomes the only shore left to crawl onto.
At first, it feels like an abandoned estate story: barking echoes in the dark, empty rooms, and signs that someone used to live here — but not anymore. Then they start finding the wrong kinds of leftovers: bones, makeshift hiding places, and a sense that they’re being watched from just outside the light. With no working escape route and the fog swallowing the shoreline, the group turns from bickering to pure survival mode as an unseen presence begins taking them out one by one.
As the night tightens its grip, the survivors piece together the island’s secret: the “crazy old lady” is only part of the legend. The real danger is what she left behind — a brutal, half-myth figure shaped by isolation, hunger, and a warped attachment to the past. The final stretch turns into a desperate cat-and-mouse chase through the house and boathouse, where the only way out is to exploit the killer’s psychology… and burn the last bridge behind you.
Legacy Note:
Humongous is a sleek little snapshot of the early-80s slasher boom — a Canadian entry (from Paul Lynch) that leans hard on atmosphere: fog, darkness, and a synth-heavy mood that does a lot of the heavy lifting. It’s also one of those “you barely see the monster” titles where the shadowy photography becomes part limitation, part strategy — and its history of different cuts/versions helped cement its reputation as a murky, half-glimpsed oddity that’s more vibe than splatter.
