Description: A haunting mix of eroticism, alienation, and political despair, Kleinhoff Hotel follows Pascale (Corinne Cléry), a wealthy French woman who misses her flight to London and finds herself stranded in Berlin. Seeking comfort, she checks into the decaying Kleinhoff Hotel, a place where she once stayed as a carefree student — now a forgotten relic filled with drifters, radicals, and ghosts of the past.
Through a hole in the wall, Pascale becomes fascinated by her neighbor Karl (Bruce Robinson), a disillusioned revolutionary hiding from the police with his junkie ex-girlfriend. Drawn to his chaos, she begins to watch his every move — an act of voyeurism that slowly transforms into obsession. When the police raid a radical club she follows him to, Pascale is arrested, only to return to the hotel where their paths violently and erotically intertwine.
Their relationship becomes a volatile fusion of lust, rebellion, and existential despair. As Karl unravels under the weight of his failures, Pascale’s detachment deepens — culminating in a final, cold act of departure after tragedy strikes.
Carlo Lizzani’s film stands as a peculiar cross between The Night Porter and Last Tango in Paris, laced with the melancholic echoes of post–’68 Europe — where erotic desire and political collapse coexist in the same dimly lit room. Corinne Cléry delivers one of her most daring performances, exposing both body and soul, while Bruce Robinson (later acclaimed as the writer-director of Withnail & I) gives the doomed revolutionary a raw vulnerability.
The film is atmospheric, unsettling, and steeped in moral ambiguity — a story of two strangers united by isolation and undone by obsession.
