Description: Set in 1594 Brazil, “Como Era Gostoso o Meu Francês” follows the journey of a captured Frenchman (Arduíno Colassanti) who falls into the hands of the Tupinambá, a native tribe allied with the French and at war with the Portuguese-backed Tupiniquim. Despite his efforts to prove his identity, the Tupinambá believe him to be Portuguese and take him as their prisoner.
As he assimilates into the tribe, he is given a wife, Seboipepe (Ana Maria Magalhães), and a place within their society. Observing their customs, he begins to understand their way of life while secretly seeking a way to escape. The film presents a realistic depiction of indigenous Brazilian culture, using naturalistic cinematography and dialogue in Tupi, French, and Portuguese.
Blending elements of historical drama and anthropological study, the narrative critiques European colonization and mercantilism, offering a unique perspective on cultural encounters. However, the Frenchman’s fate is ultimately decided by the tribe’s rituals, leading to an intense and dramatic conclusion.
Trivia: Nearly all dialogue is written and spoken in the original native Brazilian Indian language Tupi, as translated by the celebrated Brazilian pioneer filmmaker Humberto Mauro.
Also, this film was originally banned in Brazil and was rejected from the Cannes Film Festival because of excessive nudity!..
