Description: In Career Bed, director Joel M. Reed—later known for cult shockers like Bloodsucking Freaks—delivers an early slice of sexploitation that mixes showbiz sleaze with maternal obsession.
Susan, a naïve young woman with dreams of stardom, is ruthlessly groomed by her domineering stage mother, Mrs. Potter (Honey Hunter). Determined to see her daughter become famous at any cost, Mrs. Potter is willing to strike sordid deals, sacrifice her own dignity, and even pimp out her daughter to powerful men in the industry. As Susan is ushered from casting couch to fashion shoots—one involving an inflatable bunny—the lines between ambition and exploitation blur beyond recognition.
Set against a backdrop of grimy city nightlife and crumbling showbiz fantasies, Career Bed walks a fine line between absurd and disturbing. Its tone veers from kitschy to cynical, amplified by stilted performances, strange set pieces, and a haunting theme song, “Mother Love”, that bookends the film with eerie finality.
Though technically rough, the film captures a raw desperation beneath the glamorous facade of fame. Featuring early appearances by Jennifer Welles and Georgina Spelvin, Career Bed stands as a grim and memorable artifact from the golden age of exploitation cinema.
