Description: Michael Joseph Donovan, a rough-edged longshoreman from Coney Island, finds himself drowning in debt to the local mob. Brash, talkative, and perpetually down on his luck, Donovan refuses to play by their rules—even after being coerced into a high-stakes poker game rigged against him. Rather than bow to becoming the mob’s newest loan shark, he bolts, setting off a desperate run through the grimy streets of New York.
As Donovan dodges thugs and scrambles to survive, his odyssey drifts into strange and surreal territory. Along the way he encounters a mix of dangerous hustlers, loyal friends, and lustful women, while the mobsters who control the city take orders from a bizarre futuristic “decision-making” computer. Torn between his violent instincts, fleeting pleasures, and a desire for freedom, Donovan’s story spirals toward an inevitable bloody confrontation.
