THE BOOBY HATCH is a surprisingly sharp little movie, with balls. Lots of them. It can be tedious trying to sit through softcore “comedies” because most of them simply lack the WIT to keep the mind occupied: it’s nigh impossible to be FUNNY and sexy at the same time- but Russo and Streiner (and Ricci) manage to pull it off… It’s hard to believe that such a low-budget indie movie could hold up so well after so many decades, but hold up it does. Without beating it over the head, it’s the WRITING (and Ricci’s performance) that carries this one through to its explosive climax. The filmmakers have everything well in hand… For trivia fans, there’s David Emge (“Flyboy” in George Romero‘s DAWN OF THE DEAD) doing a Bogey schtick throughout and even George Kosana (the “They’re dead, they’re all messed up…” sheriff from the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) as a hard-nosed detective. Well worth a look.
