Description: Angela, emotionally fragile and deeply dependent on her psychiatrist Ana, leaves São Paulo with Paulo for a retreat in Ana’s country house, hoping distance and quiet will steady her collapsing inner life. But the peace of the landscape — woods, water, silence, and open air — does not soothe her for long, and Ana is soon drawn into the household herself, turning what should have been a recovery into an intimate triangle of shifting power and emotional dependency.
What follows is less a conventional plot than a slow rearrangement of weakness and control. Angela first appears as the unstable one, Ana as the composed observer, and Paulo as the man moving between them — yet the film gradually blurs those roles until each of them seems to be feeding off the others’ fears, needs, and desires. The country setting becomes a psychological chamber where longing, jealousy, and vulnerability circulate almost like a spell.
Rather than aiming for overt shock, As Deusas plays as a hushed, erotic existential drama — a film of glances, emotional reversals, and atmosphere, where nature itself feels complicit in the characters’ unraveling. The result is elegant, low-key, and quietly unsettling: less about “what happens next” than about how desire and instability pass from one person to another until nobody is standing on solid ground anymore.
Legacy Note:
Directed by Walter Hugo Khouri and starring Lilian Lemmertz, Kate Hansen, and Mário Benvenutti, As Deusas sits squarely in Khouri’s trademark territory of anguished characters, erotic tension, and reflective, Bergman/Antonioni-adjacent psychodrama. It’s remembered less as exploitation than as a refined Brazilian art-drama with sensual surfaces, existential unease, and a lingering interest in how fragile identities shift inside intimate relationships.
