Description: In 1814, English traveler Emily Barlow and her maid Eliza are sailing toward the East when their journey is interrupted by pirates. Captured at sea, they are taken into a fantasy version of North Africa where harems, veils, guards, letters, and secret chambers provide the stage for a very 1960s American exploitation version of forbidden adventure.

Emily is brought into the world of Ali, a powerful ruler whose palace operates according to desire, possession, and spectacle. Eliza is separated from her mistress and placed into another courtly household, while Emily begins writing letters back to England describing what has happened to her. The film uses those letters as a narrative device, turning the story into a chain of voice-over confessions, exotic peril, and softcore melodrama.

Back home, Emily’s friend Sylvia receives these accounts with shock and fascination. But even England is not safe from the film’s absurdly far-reaching pirate logic. Before long, Sylvia is also pulled into the same fantasy world, and the supposedly civilized distance between London and the harem collapses into another round of abduction, disguise, and sexualized captivity.

The story eventually becomes a parade of jealousies, punishments, court intrigues, and reversals, all filtered through the exaggerated “Oriental” fantasy style common to older erotic literature and mid-century exploitation cinema. The tone is not realistic history, but theatrical scandal: faux period costumes, letter-reading narration, stagey interiors, and a constant promise that another forbidden chamber waits just beyond the curtain.

The Lustful Turk is a cheap but ambitious costume roughie from the David F. Friedman universe. It borrows the name and broad structure of the notorious 19th-century erotic novel, then reshapes it into a late-60s sexploitation curiosity full of fake exotica, melodramatic narration, harem imagery, pirate abductions, and censor-era suggestiveness.

Legacy Note:
Directed by Byron Mabe and written and produced by David F. Friedman, The Lustful Turk sits in the roughie/costume-sexploitation phase that followed the nudie-cutie boom. Compared with a simple nudist-camp film, it tries to look bigger: pirates, palaces, historical setting, harem décor, and a literary source with a scandalous reputation.

The film’s connection to the original Lustful Turk is important. The source text was an infamous epistolary erotic novel, built around letters, captivity fantasy, exoticism, and moral transgression. Friedman’s film keeps that letter-writing structure but turns the material into a low-budget exploitation spectacle shaped by 1960s censorship limits and drive-in marketing.

Today, the film is best understood as a problematic but revealing artifact. Its fantasy geography, fake accents, racial and cultural clichés, and theatrical “Turkish” imagery are pure exploitation invention rather than anything resembling historical truth. But that artificiality is also part of its cult identity: a costume-box harem melodrama where forbidden literature, cheap sets, softcore roughie instincts, and David F. Friedman showmanship all collide.

For collectors of 1960s sexploitation, The Lustful Turk is not refined cinema, but it is a key example of how producers turned public-domain scandal, orientalist fantasy, and censor-era loopholes into grindhouse product. It is tawdry, stagey, over-narrated, and shamelessly artificial — exactly the sort of oddball relic that maps the road from nudie-cuties to harder exploitation.
