Description: Kostas Prevezanos is a stylish young hoodlum working as the trusted right-hand man of an Athens underworld boss. Handsome, ambitious, and completely accustomed to using people, he moves between nightclubs, cabarets, stolen goods, blackmail schemes, and wealthy women searching for affection.
Kostas dreams of escaping his criminal masters and building a life on his own terms. But leaving the organization requires money, and every shortcut he takes only ties him more tightly to the world he claims to despise.
His latest assignment involves Rena Karnasaki, the lonely wife of a wealthy businessman. Kostas is ordered to charm her, gain her confidence, and obtain material that can be used against her husband. To Rena, he appears to offer attention and romance missing from her privileged but emotionally empty life. To Kostas, she initially represents another opportunity for profit.
The deception becomes more complicated when genuine feeling begins intruding on the plan. Rena’s vulnerability forces Kostas to confront the human cost of his methods, while Souzy and the other figures in his nightlife circle remind him that affection in the underworld is rarely separated from jealousy, money, or betrayal.
Meanwhile, the police have been patiently watching his movements. They know about the thefts, extortion, and criminal connections surrounding him, but are waiting for the moment when ambition finally produces a mistake they can prove.
Caught between a ruthless employer, a suspicious police inspector, and a woman who may trust him more than he deserves, Kostas attempts one final maneuver toward freedom. But in sinful Athens, every favor creates a debt, every romance conceals an angle, and a man who has betrayed everyone may discover that nobody is willing to believe him when he finally wants to change.
The Secrets of Sinful Athens is a black-and-white Greek crime melodrama about social climbing through seduction. Its Athens is a city divided between wealthy drawing rooms and shadowy cabarets, where respectable society quietly depends on the same corruption it publicly condemns.
Legacy Note:
Directed by Kostas Karagiannis and written by Giorgos Papakyriakis, The Secrets of Sinful Athens belongs to the darker strain of 1960s Greek popular cinema. Rather than presenting Athens as a sunlit tourist destination, the film looks toward its nightclubs, criminal networks, compromised businessmen, and emotionally isolated upper class.
Alkis Giannakas gives Kostas the smooth appearance of a romantic leading man while allowing arrogance and calculation to remain visible beneath the charm. Ilia Livykou brings emotional weight to Rena, the wealthy woman whose loneliness makes her vulnerable to a man trained to convert affection into leverage. Zeta Apostolou, Pavlos Liaros, Stavros Xenidis, and Aggelos Mavropoulos complete the film’s web of criminals, lovers, clients, and pursuers.
The handsome black-and-white photography gives the movie much of its noir character, contrasting polished interiors with the less respectable spaces where Kostas conducts his business. Giorgos Katsaros’s music adds to the mixture of urban melancholy, nightclub glamour, and approaching danger.
For collectors of Greek exploitation and crime cinema, The Secrets of Sinful Athens is a compelling period artifact: part gangster picture, part romantic tragedy, and part morality tale about a man who believes good looks and nerve can carry him safely through every betrayal.
Twisty, stylish, and steeped in mid-60s urban fatalism, it presents Athens as a city where sin is not hidden in a single nightclub or back alley. It moves comfortably through every level of society—and Kostas is only one of the men foolish enough to believe he can control it.
