Description: Camillo Fumagalli and Adelaide Ferretti are Italian newlyweds traveling through the British countryside on their honeymoon. After a long engagement, Camillo is nervous, inexperienced, and determined that their first night as husband and wife should unfold with proper romantic dignity.

The English weather has other plans.

Lost in thick fog and unable to find a hotel, the couple arrives at Black Castle, an ancient country estate that appears to offer shelter from the night. The castle is maintained by Angus, an eccentric servant who claims to have learned some of his unusual skills while working with Frankenstein himself.

Black Castle is also occupied by its former master.

The long-dead Baron of Black Castle was an unstoppable womanizer in life, and death has done little to weaken his enthusiasm. Trapped inside the ancestral portrait gallery, the Baron immediately becomes fascinated by Adelaide and decides that her honeymoon should not be wasted on her timid husband.

With Angus supplying potions, sleeping powders, secret passages, and supernatural machinery, the Baron repeatedly removes Camillo from the bedroom and assumes his place. Adelaide believes her hesitant bridegroom has suddenly become a passionate and remarkably energetic lover, while Camillo awakens elsewhere with no understanding of what has happened.

The ghost’s nightly adventures soon expand beyond the newlywed suite. Servants, visitors, suspicious relatives, and anyone wandering through the castle after dark become part of an escalating series of disguises, interrupted encounters, magical transformations, and bedroom misunderstandings.

Camillo gradually realizes that he has a supernatural rival. Unfortunately, fighting a ghost is difficult when nobody believes him, his wife appears happier than ever, and Angus controls nearly every corridor, sleeping potion, and hidden mechanism in the castle.

The Baron, meanwhile, becomes so pleased with his return to earthly pleasure that he forgets the servant who made it possible. Angus has spent generations obeying his master and now sees an opportunity to reverse their positions. As the ghost prepares to continue his libertine existence indefinitely, the supposedly loyal servant arranges one final supernatural deception.

There Is a Ghost in My Bed combines the haunted-castle imagery of Italian Gothic cinema with the cheerful indecency of commedia sexy all’italiana. The creaking doors, candlelit corridors, ancestral portraits, and mysterious potions exist not to inspire terror, but to create increasingly elaborate excuses for romantic confusion.

Legacy Note: Directed by Claudio Giorgi, credited as Claudio De Molinis, the film arrived near the end of the classical Italian sex-comedy cycle. By 1981, the genre’s schoolteachers, soldiers, doctors, and seaside tourists had become familiar figures, encouraging filmmakers to search for new settings in which the same comic machinery could continue operating.

Black Castle provides that variation. The film borrows the atmosphere of a Gothic horror picture—fog, old stone, secret rooms, family portraits, and a restless spirit—but consistently replaces fear with farce. Its ghost is not tormented by unfinished business, revenge, or murder. He is simply unwilling to accept that death should interfere with his favorite pastime.

Renzo Montagnani is ideally cast as the Baron, combining aristocratic arrogance, theatrical charm, and the shameless confidence of a man who regards every bedroom as part of his ancestral estate. The role allows one of Italian comedy’s most recognizable performers to play a supernatural extension of the libertines he portrayed throughout the period.

Vincenzo Crocitti provides the opposite energy as Camillo, an anxious and easily displaced husband whose honeymoon becomes a contest he does not realize he has entered. His confusion and wounded dignity supply the traditional cuckold comedy beneath the film’s Gothic decorations.

Lilli Carati, as Adelaide, is the visual and comic center of the production. Her character begins as an unsuspecting bride but gradually becomes the person most affected by the difference between Camillo’s nervous affection and the Baron’s spectral confidence. The film inevitably uses Carati’s beauty as its principal attraction, yet her amused reactions often suggest that Adelaide understands more than the men assume.

As Angus, Guerrino Crivello functions as servant, magician, conspirator, and eventual author of the Baron’s downfall. His strange references to Frankenstein expand the film’s world beyond a simple ghost story, as though Black Castle were the final refuge for every worn-out monster from European popular cinema.

Lightweight, repetitive, and proudly mischievous, There Is a Ghost in My Bed is less a horror-comedy than a bedroom farce wearing a Gothic cape. Its supernatural rules change whenever another joke requires them, and its haunted castle seems designed primarily to ensure that the wrong man is always standing beside the right bed.

For collectors of late-period Italian erotic comedy, the film offers a charmingly absurd collision of traditions: Lilli Carati on honeymoon, Renzo Montagnani inside a portrait, a servant trained by Frankenstein, and a timid bridegroom discovering that even death cannot protect a husband from romantic competition.
