Description: A dusty highway, a flat tire, and a roadside wax museum that shouldn’t exist — Tourist Trap begins like an old ghost story and spirals into one of the strangest, most hypnotic horror experiences of the late 1970s.
When a group of friends break down near an abandoned attraction run by the seemingly kind Mr. Slausen (Chuck Connors, in a mesmerizing and deranged performance), they soon realize that the museum’s life-sized mannequins might not be mannequins at all. Each room conceals a nightmare tableau, and behind the plaster faces lurks a supernatural evil that blurs the line between puppet and master.
Director David Schmoeller, working under producer Charles Band, fuses Psycho’s psychological dread with House of Wax’s grotesque beauty, then injects a dose of surreal telekinesis and dream logic that makes Tourist Trap a uniquely haunting entry in American horror. The eerie sound design and Pino Donaggio’s unsettling score wrap the entire film in a delirious fever dream — part slasher, part nightmare theater.
Connors’ Slausen is both tragic and terrifying, alternating between paternal warmth and murderous mania, while the young cast (including That ’70s Show’s Tanya Roberts) plays their doom with convincing fear. The film’s pacing drifts between erotic tension and moments of pure madness, culminating in a finale that feels like a hallucinatory puppet show straight from Hell.
