Description: A seemingly innocent invitation to a weekend reunion becomes a terrifying journey into the past when Laura and her friends return to Camp Paradise, the secluded summer retreat they attended as teenagers. Surrounded by dense forests and isolated from civilization, the familiar campground holds a horrifying secret that has remained buried for years.
Laura is particularly reluctant to return. Two years earlier, her brother Matthew died under mysterious circumstances at the camp, leaving behind painful memories and unanswered questions. Nevertheless, she joins her boyfriend Shawn and their old friends for what promises to be a nostalgic weekend of drinking, partying, and renewed friendships.
But the cheerful reunion quickly descends into a nightmare. A mysterious, seemingly unstoppable killer begins stalking the visitors, turning the surrounding wilderness into a deadly hunting ground. As the bodies accumulate and panic spreads, the isolated summer camp becomes a place where nobody can be trusted and escape seems increasingly impossible.
The survivors begin to suspect that the killings are connected to Matthew’s tragic death. Meanwhile, the disturbing warnings of the camp’s caretaker, Kane, suggest that an ancient curse may be responsible for the violence. What initially appears to be a conventional murder spree gradually develops into something far more sinister.
As long-hidden secrets emerge, the distinction between human revenge and supernatural punishment becomes increasingly uncertain. The remaining friends must confront the terrible consequences of their past before the unseen killer claims them all.
Twisted Nightmare delivers everything associated with vintage American slasher cinema: an isolated location, attractive young victims, brutal murders, ominous woodland scenery, and a mysterious figure lurking in the darkness. Its unusual combination of revenge, graphic gore, and ancient supernatural evil gives the familiar formula a distinctly eccentric twist.
Legacy Note: Written and directed by Paul Hunt, Twisted Nightmare represents the late-1980s American slasher cycle, when independent horror filmmakers continued experimenting with the successful summer-camp murder formula. Its blend of masked-killer suspense and supernatural horror distinguishes it from more straightforward entries in the genre.
Rhonda Gray portrays Laura, whose traumatic connection to the campground drives the mystery. Cleve Hall appears as Matthew, while Robert Padilla plays the enigmatic caretaker Kane. The supporting ensemble includes Heather Sullivan as Cheri, Devon Jenkin as Julie, Natalie Main as Jennifer, Juliet Martin as Nicole, Crisstyn Dante as Nancy, and Donna Correa as Sylvia.
Hall also contributed to the film’s memorable creature and makeup effects. The practical gore, grotesque killer design, and atmospheric forest locations provide much of its old-fashioned horror appeal, while the increasingly elaborate murders reinforce its connection to the independent slasher boom.
Its summer-camp setting makes it a natural companion to Sleepaway Camp (1983), another cult horror film built around childhood trauma and horrifying secrets. Fans of violent campground slashers should also explore The Burning (1981), while The Final Terror (1983) offers another chilling example of wilderness terror and isolated young victims.
With its eerie woodland atmosphere, bizarre supernatural mythology, and unexpectedly savage violence, Twisted Nightmare remains an entertaining curiosity of late-1980s exploitation horror—a forgotten campground nightmare where childhood memories turn deadly and an ancient evil refuses to stay buried.
