Description: The film opens with an insufferably saccharine ballad (“Young Love, Hot Love”), which haunts the soundtrack in various instrumental forms throughout. The story follows Elke (Sonja Engels), a naïve 15-year-old Hamburg schoolgirl wrestling with adolescent desires and societal pressures.
Her pushy boyfriend, Lothar, pressures her to lose her virginity, but Elke—despite her limited acting range hesitates, torn between curiosity and fear.
Her best friend, Ellen (a suspiciously mature-looking “16-year-old”), takes a more hands-on approach to mentorship, dragging Elke into a school bathroom for an awkward, poorly executed lesbian encounter—complete with questionable hygiene.
Meanwhile, Elke suffers further trauma when she accidentally walks in on her middle-aged parents mid-coitus.
As the plot lurches forward, Lothar grows impatient with Elke’s reluctance and dumps her for a busty blonde at a chaotic orgy hosted by Ellen. Amidst the debauchery, Elke clings to her romantic ideals, symbolized by her friendship with a blind old man—a heavy-handed metaphor for “true goodness” in men.
In the final act, now 17 and disillusioned, Elke falls for Holger, a brooding near-40-year-old about to move to Singapore. In a painfully earnest scene, she loses her virginity to him by a fireplace, only for him to abandon her shortly after.
As she watches his train depart, the film ends with Elke gazing wistfully into the future, presumably still confused but “wiser.”
