Description: Ricky Ricardo is one of Brazil’s most successful young singers, surrounded by screaming admirers, relentless performances, and an ambitious manager determined to keep the money flowing. To the public, he appears to possess everything a young man could want. Behind the carefully maintained pop-idol image, however, Ricky is anxious, emotionally isolated, and trapped inside a deeply troubled family.
His mother offers him little affection, reserving her loyalty for his older brother Raul, a manipulative opportunist who lives comfortably from Ricky’s success. Raul mocks his younger brother’s sensitivity, exploits his insecurity, and repeatedly reminds him that fame has brought him neither love nor control over his own life.
During a moment of rage, Ricky sabotages Raul’s car. When the resulting accident proves fatal, the singer is overwhelmed by doubt and remorse. Unable to face his family, his career, or the possibility that he has become responsible for his brother’s death, he travels to Bahia for a performance and then disappears from the world that created him.
Ricky initially hides among the city’s nightlife, but neither pleasure nor anonymity can silence his guilt. He eventually seeks guidance from a pai de santo, whose spiritual insight forces him to confront the history of resentment, emotional dependence, and manipulation that led to the tragedy.
Following this encounter, Ricky withdraws to an isolated beach. There he meets Janaína, a mysterious young woman whose life appears bound to the sea and to Iemanjá. Far removed from managers, admirers, and family cruelty, Ricky believes he has finally discovered a love untouched by his former world.
But Janaína does not entirely belong to him—or perhaps to ordinary human life at all.
She listens constantly to the ocean, sensing a summons Ricky cannot hear or understand. As their relationship deepens, the beach becomes a threshold between romance and mythology, offering Ricky the possibility of renewal while reminding him that love cannot always erase the past or defeat destiny.
Janaína – A Virgem Proibida is a Brazilian romantic melodrama touched by supernatural mystery, Candomblé imagery, and the mythology of Iemanjá. Its provocative title suggests exploitation, but the film is more interested in guilt, emotional corruption, spiritual rebirth, and the dangerous illusion that another person can provide complete escape from oneself.
Legacy Note:
Written and directed by Olivier Perroy, Janaína – A Virgem Proibida is an unusual artifact of early-1970s Brazilian popular cinema. It combines the celebrity persona of singer Ronnie Von with family melodrama, psychological crisis, Bahian spirituality, and a tragic romance shaped by the sea.
Von’s casting gives Ricky’s story an additional layer. Already known as a real-life pop idol, he plays a fictional singer crushed by the machinery of fame and by relatives who treat his success as their property. Raul Cortez brings force to the role of the predatory older brother, while Marlene França plays the emotionally distant mother at the center of the family’s unhealthy loyalties.
The score by Egberto Gismonti adds considerable distinction, supporting the film’s movement from urban celebrity drama toward a dreamlike coastal atmosphere. Bahia is not presented merely as exotic scenery, but as a spiritual counterworld where Ricky’s modern crisis collides with older beliefs, rituals, and forces beyond rational explanation.
The film can be uneven, with abrupt editing, grandiose narration, and ambitions larger than its dramatic control. Yet those imperfections are part of its fascination. It begins as a melodrama about a damaged pop star and gradually transforms into a strange seaside myth about guilt, forbidden love, and a woman who may ultimately answer only to the ocean.
