Description: A badly burned anthropology professor lies in a hospital bed, the sole survivor of a wilderness expedition gone horribly wrong. Through a series of increasingly lurid flashbacks, he recounts the fate of his students — and their encounter with a brutal, flesh-ripping creature lurking in the forests.
What begins as a cryptid investigation quickly spirals into a parade of savage attacks. Campers vanish. Couples are ambushed. Limbs are torn. The structure unfolds in layered flashbacks within flashbacks, building toward an infamously explosive final act.
Directed by James C. Wasson, Night of the Demon became notorious in the UK as one of the banned “video nasties,” earning its reputation through explicit gore and shock-heavy set pieces rather than atmosphere. The creature — portrayed with surprising physicality by stuntman Shane Dixon — is less mystical legend and more feral executioner.
While the production values are rough and the dialogue often unintentionally hilarious, the film’s final reel escalates into relentless splatter spectacle — pushing practical effects into grotesque territory that cemented its cult infamy.
Legacy Note:
Banned in Britain during the early 1980s moral panic over home video violence, Night of the Demon became more famous for its prohibition than its plot. Today it stands as a prime example of regional American exploitation colliding with “video nasty” hysteria — part creature feature, part grindhouse endurance test.
