Description: Black Love (1973) — also known by its provocative original French title L’homme qui voulait violer le monde (The Man Who Wanted to Rape the World)— is a bold, genre-blending film by legendary French provocateur José Bénazéraf, marking his transition into more explicit territory.
Set against the politically charged atmosphere of 1970s Paris, the film follows a disillusioned young Black revolutionary who flees the United States after embezzling funds from the Black Panther Party. Arriving in France, he becomes entangled in a web of radical politics, betrayal, and personal awakening. As he attempts to support an emerging Black liberation movement in exile, he soon discovers that a traitor may be lurking within their ranks — threatening not only the cause but his own life.
At once political, erotic, and deeply psychological, Black Love explores themes of race, power, betrayal, and identity, using Bénazéraf’s signature poetic visual style. The film also dives into raw, sensual territory — a hallmark of the director’s later work — capturing the internal conflict between militant ideology and human desire.
With a haunting score by Michel Magne and the moody streets of Paris as its backdrop, Black Love defies conventional narrative structure. It is less a linear story than a fever dream of post-colonial angst, sexual liberation, and revolutionary disillusionment.
