Description: Vittorio returns to his provincial hometown after learning that his wealthy uncle is seriously ill. The old man lies confined inside a gloomy family house, attended by a night nurse and Immacolata, a beautiful young novice preparing to devote herself to religious life.

Vittorio’s arrival disturbs the uneasy stillness surrounding the household. He is restless, selfish, and more interested in pleasure than family duty, spending his days with two immature friends and continuing an affair with a dissatisfied married woman. Even his uncle’s sickroom becomes another location for drinking, flirting, and careless misbehavior.

Immacolata initially appears removed from this world. Her habit represents discipline and spiritual purpose, but life inside the house exposes her to desires she has never been permitted to examine openly. As she spends more time with Vittorio, curiosity gradually develops into attraction.

Vittorio is hardly a romantic hero. He is vain, irresponsible, and casually cruel toward the women who surround him. Yet Immacolata’s sheltered life leaves her vulnerable to the freedom he appears to represent. What she interprets as passion may be only another form of male entitlement, but her feelings begin weakening the boundary between vocation and ordinary human longing.

Around them, the provincial community presents morality as performance. Men pursue pleasure while demanding purity from women; marriage conceals betrayal; religion is used to police desire rather than understand it. Even the dying uncle watches from the darkness, adding a disturbing atmosphere of voyeurism and judgment to Immacolata’s awakening.

When she finally removes the clothing associated with her religious future, the gesture becomes more than simple provocation. It is an attempt to choose her own life, however uncertain and dangerous that choice may be. For a brief moment, the countryside appears to promise escape from the suffocating rooms, family expectations, and moral surveillance surrounding her.

But The Novice does not reward that rebellion with a conventional romantic ending. Its final reversal abruptly punctures the fantasy of liberation, leaving behind a bitter impression of desire colliding with the fatalism of provincial life.

Legacy Note:
Directed by Giuliano Biagetti, credited as Pier Giorgio Ferretti, The Novice belongs to the darker side of the 1970s Italian erotic comedy cycle. It contains the expected teasing situations and bedroom complications, but its shadowy interiors, unpleasant male characters, and startling conclusion separate it from the era’s brighter schoolroom and seaside farces.

Gloria Guida plays Immacolata with a mixture of innocence, curiosity, and emotional uncertainty. Although the film was inevitably marketed around the image of Guida in a novice’s habit, her character represents something more melancholy: a young woman attempting to distinguish genuine freedom from the fantasies projected onto her by men.

Gino Milli’s Vittorio is deliberately difficult to admire. His affairs, friendships, and treatment of women expose the masculine privilege beneath the film’s comic surface. Femi Benussi adds another perspective as the married woman trapped inside the same provincial culture, while Lionel Stander gives the dying uncle a strange mixture of weakness, menace, and watchful authority.

Stander’s presence also brings unusual film-history weight. After being blacklisted in Hollywood, the American character actor spent years working in European productions, and his appearance here places a veteran political exile inside one of Italian popular cinema’s most peculiar domestic melodramas.

Uneven, murky, and sometimes uncomfortable, The Novice is not among Gloria Guida’s most carefree vehicles. Its interest lies in that difference: beneath the provocative title is a surprisingly bleak story about hypocrisy, frustrated women, irresponsible men, and a young novice who discovers that leaving one restrictive world does not guarantee freedom in the next.
