Description: “Where Are You Going on Holiday?” (Dove vai in vacanza?, 1978) is an Italian anthology film composed of three separate comedic episodes directed by acclaimed filmmakers Alberto Sordi, Luciano Salce, and Mauro Bolognini. Each story revolves around Italians attempting to enjoy—or endure—their vacation, but instead finding themselves navigating unexpected cultural, social, and personal challenges.
In one episode, Alberto Sordi plays a Roman fruit seller who, together with his wife, is pushed by their sophisticated children into taking a “high-culture” holiday. Instead of indulging in typical tourist pleasures, the couple embarks on a regimented journey through museums, art galleries, and strict dietary programs. Their children’s well-intentioned but elitist plans leave them bewildered, hungry, and longing for simple comforts like their beloved Roman sausages and pasta. This segment becomes a clever satire on class differences, the pretension of high culture, and the pressure families place on each other to conform.
Another segment features renowned Italian actors such as Ugo Tognazzi and Stefania Sandrelli, focusing on romantic and generational misunderstandings that arise when people from different walks of life share the same holiday spaces. Here, youthful energy meets more traditional Italian values, and the resulting interactions are both humorous and subtly critical of the characters’ desires and insecurities.
Throughout the film, the humor ranges from gentle satire to broad comedy, often highlighting social norms, body image issues, and the tension between old and new Italy. Although the episodes differ in tone and style, they are bound together by the overarching theme of what a “proper” vacation should be and how people struggle to break free from everyday constraints—only to discover that their own traditions, tastes, and identities may be harder to leave behind than they anticipated.
