Description: Marriage, temptation, and the irresistible attraction of forbidden romance collide in Sex and the Other Woman, a delightfully cheeky British erotic comedy exploring what happens when respectable husbands discover that marital fidelity is easier promised than practiced.
Introduced by the distinguished Richard Wattis, the film presents four mischievous stories of infidelity, preceded by a humorous encounter involving a henpecked husband desperate to escape his domineering wife’s constant complaints.
In one episode, attractive office secretary Lisa sets her sights on married accountant Chris, turning an ordinary workplace into a dangerous playground of flirtation and temptation. Another follows Elizabeth, an ambitious model who becomes involved with wealthy tennis enthusiast Reggie, only to discover that securing his divorce may destroy the financial advantages that originally attracted her.
Elsewhere, a middle-aged gentleman finds his comfortable domestic life disrupted by an unexpected attraction involving an adult houseguest. In the final story, a married man’s affair with his wife’s closest friend produces an extraordinary arrangement that challenges conventional ideas about marriage, loyalty, and possessiveness.
Throughout these increasingly ridiculous situations, the women often prove far more calculating and resourceful than the men who pursue them. Scheming lovers, suspicious wives, wealthy husbands, and opportunistic mistresses become entangled in an amusing parade of misunderstandings, jealousy, and romantic deception.
Sex and the Other Woman combines playful British humor, glamorous early-1970s fashions, attractive performers, and generous nudity in a lively sex comedy that treats adultery as an endless source of romantic mischief and social embarrassment.
Legacy Note: Directed by Stanley A. Long, one of the notable figures of British exploitation cinema, Sex and the Other Woman captures the distinctive atmosphere of the early-1970s British sex-comedy boom. Its episodic format allowed Long to explore changing sexual attitudes, domestic hypocrisy, and the widening gap between traditional respectability and the sexual revolution.
The film features an appealing ensemble of established character actors and attractive newcomers. Maggie Wright brings calculating charm to Elizabeth, while Jane Cardew portrays the flirtatious Lisa. Felicity Devonshire, Margaret Burton, Louise Pajo, and Peggy Ann Clifford contribute to its colorful collection of mistresses, wives, and unconventional romantic entanglements.
Long continued exploring the more uninhibited side of British sexploitation in On the Game (1974), which also features Louise Pajo. His subsequent comedies Adventures of a Taxi Driver (1976) and Adventures of a Private Eye (1977) would develop this distinctly British mixture of slapstick, sexual farce, and embarrassing encounters into an even broader comic formula.
With its colorful London locations, period fashions, sophisticated comic presentation, and cheerfully mischievous attitude toward extramarital relationships, Sex and the Other Woman remains an entertaining example of vintage British adult comedy—a playful reminder that romantic temptation rarely produces the happy ending its participants originally imagined.
