Description: Simone is a lonely teenage girl whose entire existence revolves around R, a mysterious German New Wave pop star. She listens obsessively to his records, writes endless unanswered love letters, and spends her days imagining a future with a man she has never met. What begins as ordinary teenage admiration gradually develops into a dangerous obsession that consumes every aspect of her life.

Increasingly detached from school, family, and reality, Simone becomes convinced that R secretly shares her feelings. After a bitter confrontation with her parents, she leaves home and travels to Munich, determined to find the elusive musician and transform her fantasies into reality.

When she finally encounters her idol outside a television studio, the emotional shock causes her to collapse. R takes an interest in the mysterious young admirer, and Simone suddenly finds herself closer to her dream than she ever imagined. But the world behind the glamorous public image proves colder and more complicated than the fantasy she has constructed.

As their encounter unfolds, Simone discovers that her imagined relationship bears little resemblance to reality. Unable to accept rejection, her adoration transforms into possessive desperation, pushing her toward an increasingly disturbing confrontation with the man she has elevated into an almost supernatural figure.

What follows is a chilling descent into psychological disintegration, culminating in one of the most shocking conclusions in early-1980s European horror cinema. The film’s restrained pacing, hypnotic electronic soundtrack, and unsettling imagery gradually transform an apparently simple story of teenage stalking and celebrity worship into an unforgettable nightmare.

Trance is a haunting blend of psychological drama, minimalist horror, and the icy visual aesthetics of Germany’s New Wave music scene. Rather than relying on constant violence, it builds tension through loneliness, emotional isolation, and the terrifying consequences of confusing fantasy with genuine human connection.

Legacy Note: Written and directed by Eckhart Schmidt, Der Fan stands among the more distinctive examples of European psychological horror from the early 1980s. Its sparse dialogue, carefully composed photography, and unnerving atmosphere reflect the influence of European art cinema as much as conventional genre filmmaking.

Désirée Nosbusch delivers a remarkably controlled performance as Simone, conveying emotional vulnerability, alienation, and increasingly dangerous fixation with an often expressionless intensity. Bodo Staiger, the actual frontman of German electronic band Rheingold, portrays the enigmatic pop star R, giving the film an unusual connection to the musical culture it depicts. Rheingold’s atmospheric synthesizer music becomes an essential part of the film’s hypnotic identity.

The film’s disturbing treatment of celebrity obsession makes it a fascinating companion to The Last Horror Film (1982), in which an obsessive admirer pursues a famous actress with increasingly dangerous consequences. A more realistic examination of destructive possessiveness and celebrity culture can be found in Star 80 (1983).

Its combination of contemporary music, stylish photography, and sudden violence also recalls the distinctive atmosphere of Lucio Fulci’s Murder-Rock: Dancing Death (1984), another European thriller that transforms the entertainment world into a setting for murder and psychological terror.

The film’s infamous climax introduces a disturbing element of cannibalism, turning the idea of consuming popular culture into a horrifyingly literal metaphor. Beneath its shocking surface lies a provocative examination of fandom, celebrity manipulation, emotional dependency, and the destructive power of idealized love.

Cold, hypnotic, and deeply unsettling, Trance aka Der Fan remains an extraordinary cult discovery—a uniquely German nightmare in which electronic music, youthful alienation, and obsessive devotion collide with the darkest extremes of human psychology.
