Description: One of the first nudist films to gain widespread exposure in the U.S., this movie, though still largely confined to grindhouse theaters, occasionally saw distribution through unconventional means. In some cases, long-time exploitation film distributor Kroger Babb used a “four-walling” strategy: renting theaters for a flat fee and pocketing all proceeds, including theater rental fees, as alleged by some exhibitors.
The film presents itself as “A Picturization of Rudyard Kipling’s Immortal Poem—The Ladies.” It begins with retired soldier and world traveler Tommy Atkins relaxing in a pine lodge, enjoying his pipe and a generous pour of Scotch. Keeping him company is the alluring “Cameo Girl,” who provides additional comforts while Tommy leafs through a Kipling volume. He suggests that the book recounts his personal experiences with women around the world.
The movie’s promotional hook emphasized that all the women featured are “wearing the wind” and nothing else—an accurate claim, as the women appear completely nude throughout. To promote the film further, co-producer Harry Smith included a plea in the press materials, requesting projectionists not to cut out the frames. Instead, he offered to send them a complete set of color slides featuring the six women—free of charge—if they wrote to him at his Hollywood address. (This offer is no longer valid.)
Among the cast, a character dubbed the “Sweet Thing of 16” was marketed as a 16-year-old high school junior from New Mexico. However, given Hollywood’s regulations and scrutiny from the Juvenile Division of the police department, it’s highly likely she could have provided proof of being at least 21 if questioned.
For those drawn to the literary angle, the film incorporates Kipling’s lines, such as “The Colonel’s Lady and Judy O’Grady are sisters under the skin,” into its narrative. Ultimately, the movie doubles as a showcase of nudity and a loose interpretation of Kipling’s poetry, as demonstrated by the creative team behind it.
